Little Things make Big Difference

March 30, 2024

Today marks the 3rd anniversary of my elective transhumeral “above elbow” amputation of my right

dominant arm.  I celebrate the new challenges.  It has enlightened me to embrace the little things with utter patience, especially the simple task that once was second nature.

One of the many discoveries of an upper amputee is there are few products for one-hand use and fewer for left-hand use.  Of course, my determination is to seize the opportunity to design our home and protect the twice fractured left wrist from overuse and harm’s way of further injury.  This fuels my ambition to create tools for independence.

April is officially designated “Limb Loss and Limb Difference Awareness Month.”  It seems appropriate to share pictures and videos of the creative modifications of our home and the tools to accomplish my daily tasks independently.  I have some proud successes and some a work in progress.

The power of a community can make “big differences” through awareness to better understand how to aspire and broaden growth and development.  This month, I wish to promote conversation and connection to empower innovation to produce essential products for upper amputees and others with arm disability for independence.

I am grateful for the incredible support of family and friends.  They are my inspirational motivators, then and now.  I am blessed.
